The Best Beaches in Lanzarote: an Island-Wide Guide

Lanzarote is simultaneously a volcanic island and a coastal paradise — a combination that produces beaches unlike anything else in the Atlantic. The black rock, the clear water, the consistent sun, and the absence of the mass development that has overwhelmed parts of Gran Canaria and Tenerife make the island's coastline worth exploring properly.

Playa de Papagayo — Southern Icon

Papagayo is the beach most Lanzarote visitors put on their list before arriving, and it rarely disappoints. Situated within Los Ajaches Natural Park near Playa Blanca, it is a series of shell-shaped coves rather than a single beach — each one tucked between headlands, each offering turquoise water over white sand.

The access road is unpaved and requires a small entry fee to the natural park. There are no large facilities — a small chiringuito operates in season, but the general instruction is to arrive prepared. Bring water, food, sun protection, and a snorkel.

**Distance from Gueldera Apartments:** approximately 35 minutes by car.

**Best for:** snorkelling, couples, photography, any visitor who wants to see why Lanzarote has a reputation as one of Europe's finest beach destinations.

Playa de Famara — Surfer's Paradise

The northwest coast of Lanzarote is a different world from the south. Famara Beach runs for six kilometres under the dramatic Famara cliffs — a wall of rock that rises 600 metres from the sea and catches the clouds that otherwise miss the island.

The beach faces northwest and picks up consistent Atlantic swells. Wind and kitesurfing schools operate from the village of Caleta de Famara at the southern end; surf schools run beginner sessions here regularly. The water is colder than the south — early morning fog is common in winter and spring.

This is not a sunlounger-and-cocktails beach. It is wild, expansive, and genuinely impressive.

Caletón Blanco — Natural Pools Near Órzola

Near the northern village of Órzola, Caletón Blanco is one of Lanzarote's most distinctive beaches: white sand set against black volcanic rock, with natural shallow-water pools formed by the lava formations. The contrast in colour is extreme and photographically striking.

The pools are calm and shallow enough for small children. The beach is relatively uncrowded because the northern location puts it beyond most visitors' range. Worth the extra drive.

**Best for:** families with young children, natural pool swimming, photography.

Playa de las Conchas — La Graciosa's Crown

La Graciosa is the small island north of Lanzarote, reached by ferry from Órzola (30-minute crossing). Las Conchas is its finest beach — a north-facing bay of golden sand with clear water and views to the uninhabited island of Montaña Clara.

Note that Las Conchas faces north and can have strong currents; it is more of a walking and photography beach than a swimming destination. The ferry crossing and the bike ride (or taxi) across La Graciosa make this a full-day excursion, but it is worth planning.

Playa Chica — Urban Dive Beach

Playa Chica is the diving and snorkelling beach of Puerto del Carmen, positioned just west of the main harbour. The water is calm, clear, and home to the small sea life — octopus, moray eel, wrasse — that the sheltered rocky coastline supports.

Several PADI dive centres operate from the harbour adjacent to Playa Chica, making it the natural starting point for anyone who wants to learn to dive or extend their certification during a Lanzarote holiday.

Practical Advice for Lanzarote Beach Days

**Hire a car.** The best beaches are spread across the island. Without a car, you are limited to Puerto del Carmen and whatever organised tours visit.

**Sun protection.** Lanzarote's UV index is high year-round. Factor 50 is not excessive, especially between 11:00 and 15:00.

**Wind.** The trade winds are reliable — usually pleasant on the beach, occasionally strong enough to blow sand. The north and northwest coasts are windier than the south.

**Remote beaches.** Papagayo and Caletón Blanco have limited or no facilities. Bring more water than you think you need.

**Timing.** Papagayo fills up between 11:00 and 16:00 in high season. Arriving at 09:30 or after 16:30 makes a significant difference.
