The Best Beaches Near Puerto del Carmen

A local guide to the finest Atlantic beaches within walking distance of Gueldera Apartments — from the golden sweep of Playa Grande to the crystal waters of Playa Chica.

Puerto del Carmen is blessed with some of the finest beaches in the Canary Islands — and from Gueldera Apartments, the best of them are just a short walk away. Here is our local guide to the beaches you should know.

Playa Grande

The undisputed star of Puerto del Carmen, Playa Grande stretches for almost two kilometres of golden sand backed by the resort's main promenade. The beach faces southeast, which means it catches the sun from morning until late afternoon — ideal for a full day of sunbathing.

The water here is Atlantic, which means it is cleaner and more mineral than the Mediterranean, with gentle currents that are safe for all ages. The beach is regularly awarded the Blue Flag and is professionally maintained throughout the season.

**Distance from Gueldera Apartments:** approx. 300 metres on foot.

Playa Chica

Just west of the main harbour, Playa Chica ("Small Beach") lives up to its name in size but not in character. This sheltered cove has calmer waters than Playa Grande, making it a favourite among snorkellers and beginner divers. The rocky outcrops harbour small fish, octopus, and the occasional moray eel.

Several dive centres operate from the harbour area adjacent to Playa Chica, offering courses from complete beginner to PADI Divemaster.

Playa de Matagorda

Heading north from Puerto del Carmen, Playa de Matagorda is a quieter alternative to Playa Grande — particularly popular with families who prefer less bustle. The beach is wide, flat, and bordered by a pleasant cycling and walking path.

**Distance from Gueldera Apartments:** approx. 25 minutes by bicycle.

Playa de los Pocillos

Further north still, Los Pocillos offers excellent conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing thanks to the reliable trade winds. The beach itself is also one of the wider and more sheltered on this stretch of coast.

Tips for Beach Days

  • **Beach towels:** Gueldera provides beach towels in every apartment — no need to pack yours.
  • **Parking:** The free street parking near the apartments means you can base yourself with us and walk to the beach.
  • **Sunscreen:** Lanzarote has strong UV radiation year-round. Factor 50 is recommended, particularly between 11:00 and 15:00.
  • **Water shoes:** Playa Chica's rocky entry benefits from water shoes. The SPAR supermarket nearby sells them inexpensively.
  • **Early mornings:** For a peaceful beach experience, arrive before 09:00. By 11:00, the main beaches fill up quickly in high season.
